After meeting and marrying his life long love and partner, Alice Brinkman Stayer in 1938, RF moved his family to a small town in Wisconsin. Before they ever bought the retail shop in Johnsonville, the Stayers put money down on a florist shop in Milwaukee, where they were living at the time, their son said. Stayer's humble beginnings fostered a rock-solid work ethic, his son said. When the elder Stayer was 11, his father left the family and Ralph started working to help support his mother and five siblings. "That's when my dad knew he had a great recipe," said Ralph C. Stayer, 64.
